DreamWorks Animation, the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council partner to launch a new series of tween-targeted public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Shrek characters that aim to get kids/tweens to spend more time outdoors with nature as part of the Re-connecting Kids with Nature campaign. The PSAs, which will be distributed to 33,000 media outlets nationwide, will be introduced today at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, a day ahead of National Get Outdoors Day. Created pro bono by DreamWorks Animation and Turbine Boost, the PSAs direct kid/parents to DiscoverTheForest.org, where they can find suggested outdoor activities and educational and conservation information. Kids/parents can also access an interactive tool (also available via mobile devices), powered by Nature Find and Google Maps, where they can search for nearby forests and parks to explore. Additionally, the Brigham Young University Ad Lab developed a second series of radio, outdoor and online ads to further reach tweens with the messaging.

The 50th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, will be honored as Random House Children’s Books, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, The Ocean Project, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) are teaming up to celebrate World Oceans Day, held annually on June 8. Seventy-five AZA accredited zoos and aquariums nationwide, and 600+ Ocean Project partners worldwide are set to host family events inspired by One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, with the goal of teaching kids about our ocean’s and what we can do to protect the oceans and the diverse life forms the live in them. Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green, which aims to empower kids to take an active role in the environment, celebrates its first anniversary with the premiere of all new content. Starting May 20, new on-air messaging will begin airing on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The spots, which are chock full of about 40 Disney celebrities, will also be featured on Radio Disney and the recently redesigned corresponding website, Disney.com/projectgreen. Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green is set to expand locally and globally, including its launch last month in Latin America. Upcoming local events in US cities are designed to inspire kids through hands-on experiences, including tree planting and clean-ups. The first new event kicks off June 6, World Oceans Day, at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

Greenzys, a new kid-targeted eco-friendly brand will launch exclusively at FAO Schwarz in NYC and then online at FAO.com on April 5, 2010, just ahead of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. Created by product designer Lisa Keyser, the Greenzys brand is designed to promote green living and teach eco-friendly practices to kids through of a book by author Danielle Mentzer and illustrator Cris de Lara from DK Publishing, plush character toys by Kids Preferred, a preschool animated series (in development), other animated content, theme song, and Greenzys.com. Debuting next month, the Greenzys theme song is performed by Samia Najimy Finnerty (13), daughter of Kathy Najimy and Dan Finnerty (Dan Band), and accompanied by an animated video. Keyser co-founded Greenzys with Mark Lieber, also a founder of Rethink Entertainment and Media. A portion of each Greenzys purchase will benefit the Environmental Media Association.
